Lives at Stake: There’s Urgency for New Reconciliation Effort to Defund Planned Parenthood

Washington, DC — Operation Rescue stands with the Susan B. Anthony List in calling for Congress to immediately pass a reconciliation bill that would deny taxpayer funds to Planned Parenthood.
“Despite Congress’ failure to pass a health care bill, there are still enough votes to successfully defund Planned Parenthood, and the House should move with all urgency to get this done,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue.
Why the urgency?
For each week of delay, Planned Parenthood will take the lives of 6,230 innocent babies.
In the past 14 months, Operation Rescue has documented 37 medical emergencies at Planned Parenthood abortion facilities that required emergency transport of abortion patients suffering, in many cases, avoidable life-threatening complications. Those include one emergency that occurred just yesterday on March 29, 2017, at the Margaret Sanger Center Planned Parenthood located on Bleecker Street in New York City. [See Chart below. Operation Rescue has also documented the death of one Planned Parenthood patient, Cree Erwin-Sheppard, who died as the result of a uterine perforation during a suction aspiration abortion at Planned Parenthood’s Kalamazoo, Michigan, abortion facility.
Official inspection reports obtained by Operation Rescue show Planned Parenthood abortion facilities have been cited for shocking facility sanitation and safety violations, such as failure to properly sterilize surgical instruments, which place the lives of women at risk. “Since Planned Parenthood wants to keep killing babies, they should not be subsidized by our tax money,” said Newman. “If they can’t figure out how to keep their abortion customers out of the emergency rooms and out of the funeral homes, they don’t deserve our tax money, either. The time to defund Planned Parenthood is now.”
